The public transport in the South of Crete is not well developed. If you want to explore the South, a rental car is a MUST. Hikers can use the ferry as a means of transport between the places on the south coast.
However, it does not pay off if you use the ferry too often and it is more expensive than renting a car. The transfer to the south coast alone is just as expensive "one-way" as a week's rental car.
