Hiking on Crete

In the west of the largest Greek island - Crete, the Lefka Ori, the White Mountains, run through the land and, with their 40 peaks over 2,000 m high, are the largest and most closed mountain range on the island. They are considered special in many ways: hardly anywhere else are the landscape contrasts between plateaus, rugged peaks and gorges, between the fertile foothills to the north and the barren zones to the south greater than here. In winter, this mountain range above 1,000 m is often covered in a blanket of snow for weeks, which sometimes does not completely melt until July. As the island's largest water supplier, the White Mountains feed the surrounding rivers and the many springs down to the south coast. Here you will find a large number of beautifully situated mountain villages in which the local population has preserved its traditions and peculiarities.

Only a few decades ago, this mountain range and its foothills were only accessible via mule tracks and were therefore an ideal refuge for the local population from enemy invasions. When you enjoy the cool waves of the sea on the sandy beach, while the snow-capped peaks of the White Mountains shine in the background, you will experience why this area is one of the most beautiful and impressive areas in the entire Mediterranean.
