The Mountain Village Afrata is located in western Crete at the Rodhopou-Peninsula. It is a small traditional mountain village with a tavern. Approximately 7 km from the larger coastal town kolimbari. To Chania Town 30.4 Km approximately 38 minutes’ drive. Below the village is a path that leads to the pebble beach.This rocky inlet is popular with the locals. Because this is the most beautiful adventure for fishing and snorkeling! Diving Clubs come from Chania town to dive here, it is also a good area for snorkeling. Afrata is still completely untapped from tourism. This makes the charm for many individuals. At this bay there is a small tavern, which also gives a few deck chairs. From the Village kolimbari You can walk to Afrata. The trail (not on the coast road) to Afrata over the village Astratigos is an exciting trail on the Rodhopou Peninsula. It is not so easy to find the way to Astratigos from kolimbari. You have to ask the locals because it is hard to find and is not signed. Our young individualists love this hiking tour from kolimbari-to Afrata. It is not too heavy, just 2 hours (round trip 4 hours) great vantage points and not known at all. You can walk back through the same path or as a circular walk along the coastal road back. The coastal road is a very quiet road and offers over the whole length, unrestricted panoramic views of the spectacular collection of massive cliffs ! Snorkelers and scuba divers are rewarded with a fantastic under water world.

Agia Marina is a coastal village in the municipality of Chania in western Crete. 10 km from the old town of Chania (15 minutes ´drive ) and 147 km from the Capital City Heraklion (2 hours drive). There are bus connection to Chania-Town and to Kastelli-Kissamos. A big shopping street with shops, taverns and clubs goes the length of the coastal road. It is popular with it´s sandy beach. Agios Apostolis – Swimming Bays, Nature & Relaxed Crete near Chania Agios Apostolis (also known as Agioi Apostoloi) is a popular suburb of Chania, located just about 4.5 km west of the picturesque old town. The area combines easy access to the city with a high quality of life by the sea and is considered one of the most important recreational areas for the residents of Chania. Instead of large hotel complexes, the setting is characterized by nature, small accommodations, and individual travelers. Three sheltered bays – ideal for swimming The defining feature of Agios Apostolis is its three beautiful, separate swimming bays. Each bay has a fine sandy beach with gently sloping shores and is well protected from the wind – ideal conditions for relaxed swimming.

Thanks to the sheltered location, the water here warms up relatively quickly in spring. Many locals use the bays for swimming well into autumn – sometimes even until December. Scenic hill & namesake of the area Between the bays rises a small hill offering particularly beautiful panoramic views: across all three bays, the deep blue sea, and in the background the Lefka Ori (White Mountains), which are often snow-covered well into early summer. On this hill stands the small church of Agii Apostoli, after which the area is named. Local recreational area Agios Apostolis is not a typical resort, but rather a recreational area for the local population. A small park with pine and eucalyptus trees provides shaded paths, jogging routes, and sports facilities. As parts of the coastal area are protected, development has remained deliberately low-density – with green spaces between the buildings and direct access to the sea. Almyrida is a coastal village in the West Coast of Crete located 25 Km from Chania City (20 Minutes drive) and 125 km tot he Capital City Heraklion ( 2 hours drive). The small village Almirida is 17 km eastwards from the bay of Souda-Harbour. Amirida village has several taverns, kafenios and supermarkets. Almirida is popular with an excellent sandy beach. The region offers plenty of sights such as the freshwater lake of Kournas, the ancient Aptera, the monasteries of the Akrotiri peninsula Agia Triada ( biggest Monastery of Crete), the Gorge of Samaria, The Gorge Agia Irini, The protected Area: The Lagoon Balos, and the unique venetian old town of Chania.

The Region ov Apokoronas extends on the northwest coast of Crete from Souda Bay, east of the Venetian port city of Chania, to Georgioupolis. 25 km to the old town of Chania, one of the most beautiful port cities in Crete and approx. 35 km to Chania airport and 42 km to the south coastal town of Chora Sfakion. 130 km to Heraklion and 135 km to the Knossos archaeological site. Around the Apokoronas area there are the beautiful mountain villages of the West. It is an area of rolling hills and beautiful sandy beaches in the hinterland of the coastal towns of Kalives and Almirida. This hilly region has good cycling and hiking trails.

There has been a settlement in Aptera since antiquity and the ruins of different epochs, Mycenae, Dorian, Hellenic up to the Byzantines have all left their mark here. From time immemorial a plentiful supply of water, a terrific view of the Souda Bay and a strategically important location were important reasons for settling here. The remains visible today are spread out over a large secured area. The well-preserved Roman cisterns, which are partly built underground, are awe-inspiring. For us as laymen the sheer dimensions of these excavations are impressive. Aptera is not as well known as Knossos or Phaistos to package holidaymakers so it is nearly devoid of visitors. No less interesting, another epoch or rather epochs.

Askifou and the Askifou-Plateau is the biggest and quaint area of Western Crete. The most polular Gorge in this region is the Imbros Gorge, the Kalikrates Gorge and the Aradena Gorge. The Mountain-Village Askifou has a Mini Market, a Tavern a Cheese Dairy. The Askifou Plateau is located 58 km southwards from the Airport of Chania ( one hour drive), 29 km ( 41 minutes drive) from the Coastal Area of Frangokastello with the quiet magnificent sandy beaches and 21 km from the Village Hora Sfakion ( 30 minutes drive).

The coast around the seaside village Bali is jagged and sparsely populated. Steep cliffs encircle this homely bathing location and the panorama is impressive. The living quarters meander around the harbour and up into the mountains. Many have a wonderful view of the bay. Some of the hotels offer "all-inclusive". The coastal village of Bali is located between the cities of Rethymnon and Heraklion in northern Crete. From Bali to the capital Heraklion it is only 53 km approx. 55 minutes´ drive. It is about 30 km to the City of Rethymnon. 36 minutes´ drive. Bali has sandy beaches therefore popular with families but above all the short airport transfer is the selection criterion for families to choose this location.

Balos Lagoon - Those clear, turquoise waters lapping against a white sandy beach might suggest this secluded spot is in the Caribbean but this is the most westerly settlement of Crete. The Nature Reserve Balos Beach is perched on the westerly edge of Gramvousa-Peninsula. This area is home to some of Crete’s wildest landscapes. Chania for many, the most beautiful town in Crete The town is simply unique and alive. Chania is the second largest City of Crete. Large parts of the old town are closed to traffic; the bulk of the Venetian mansions restored or converted into hotels. One of the most important constructions of the Venetian Period is the Entrance of Renier Mansion. In former times Chania was divided in 3 parts the East part for the Muslims the Southwest part for the Jewish and the West part for the Christians. In the East oft he old town there are traces of the Turks: a small minaret or masonry. On the Northeast of the Venetian walls there is the only preserved gate “The rampart Sabbionara” still preserves its Turkish name "koum - kapi (Kum Kapisi = the Gate of the Sand it is constructed in the sea. On the front of the rampart, the circular Venetian emblem of the lion of Agios Marcos is still preserved. The Byzantine Wall was built in 12th century and its outline is irregular with longitudinal axle from the East to the West, where its two central gates were located.

Falassarna - Beach the water-sports-paradise. Falassarna- Beach is a nature reserve with dunes on the west coast of Crete. Located 54 km westwards from Chania Town and 14 km from the town Kissamos. It extends over a length of about 2 km. Falassarna is a Paradise for surfing and paragliding. There are two watersports-stations www.surfingcrete.webs.com and www.surfisland.gr offering Stand Up Boards (SUP), Surfing and Kite Surfing. The area consists of several sandy beaches and a few small apartment houses. There are two beach clubs with good music, where fast food is offered and 5 restaurants. The beach clubs also offer sun loungers and parasols (price for booth 2 chairs and an umbrella = 8 €,) There is a small supermarket. On the big beach there are 2 watersports stations.To the next big town Kissamsos with hospital 14.4 km about 25 minutes’ drive. You will find several ATMs, shops, hairdressers and several banks and pharmacies. Highlight in Falassarna are the excavations of the ancient port city Polirinia from the 6th century BC. The excavations are at the end of the bay, where it is rocky. My favorite place there is the carved stone throne. What for a function it had is still unclear. The throne is located south of the excavations and anyone can sit down in, what I naturally enjoyed!

The village of Georgioupolis is on the north west coast of Crete, more or less in the middle between Chania and Rethymnon on one of Crete´s longest sandy beaches. The only freshwater lake on the Island about 8 km inland feeds several streams and these ensure that the hinterland of Georgioupolis blossoms in green. Gerani is composed of several side streets along the coastal road. Formerly the beach was totally covered with bamboo and reeds. The owners have cleared it here and there and built various individual hotels and apartments. Everything is very familiar and large hotel concerns have not established themselves here. This makes the vicinity very attractive. The distance between the different establishments is large. The scenery is not dominated by buildings. Even the beach is unspoilt, often devoid of people and mostly sandy with not much shingle. There are plenty of taverns and for those who want some "action it is 30 minutes walk to Platanias with every variety of entertainment. The Christiana-Appartments are lovingly run and the Hotel Aegean can be recommended. If you have some money left in the holiday budget a hire car or scooter is a good idea.

Kalathas is a coastal village located in the Akrotiri Peninsula in Western Crete and belongs to the municipality of Chania. 9,7 km, 15 minutes drive to Chania Old Town. Kalathas is actually a quiet village with several taverns, a fantastic sandy beach with Beach Volley, and beach taverns. 2 hours drive to the Capital City Heraklion ( 144 km) . The small sea side village Kalives is located in western Crete, 21 km eastwards from the old town of Chania-City, in Souda Bay. There are some taverns in the village square and in the narrow river bank streets. The long sandy beach was always a magnet for town dwellers with Chania only about 20 km away. Tourists and locals mix well together. Kalives is a cozy little coastal town with a green hinterland and a small sandy bay. The trademark of Kalives are the white lime-washed houses. Small coastal road surrounded by taverns, cafes and a few small side streets. There are some good shops, a bar and a club in the village. From the beach you can see two small offshore islands. Kastelli-Kissamoss is the most westerly town of Crete. Enthroned on a hill over the city, like a grand hotel that has seen better days is the fortress Polirinia ( 5 km in the inland). The Dorians erected this town and Kastelli-Kissamos was the seaport. A visit to this village is worth it not only because of the archeological excavations. Those who have finally reached the top of the mountain of Polirinia after a long climb are rewarded by a view of the world that they have never seen before. The beach is mostly shingle and deserted. Around Kastelli there are also some sandy bays. The inland is notable for green scenery olive trees as far as the eye can see. The Rodoupou Peninsular to the North and the wild Gramvoussa to the South give the bay a formidable setting. Both peninsulars are barely inhabited.

Kolimbari (Kolymbari) is a small fishing village with a pebble beach at the foot of the Rohopou Peninsula. Even in the high season the beach has plenty of space and there are taverns, kiosks and some shops. The Moni Gonias Monastery (late middle ages) is the most famous landmark in this little fishing location. The tavern owners in Kolimbari (Kolymbari) still often go out to catch fish themselves but it is not just fresh fish which the taverns offer. The atmosphere at the taverns in the tiny fishing harbour ensures a pleasant evening and is an ideal starting point for ramblers and bikers. There are also well defined country roads to the inland which are practically traffic free and so suitable for bikers and walkers alike. Kolimbari (Kolymbari) is perfect for those in search of some peace and quiet whilst getting to know the country and the people. There is no trace of the hustle and bustle of Platanias which is around 7 km away.

Maleme, located on the north-west coast of Crete, was originally of strategic importance and the landing point of the German army in World War II. Today the exceptionally well tended German military cemetery is a place in which to reflect. The beach is a mixture of shingle and sand. On the beachfront there are some self-catering apartments and villas. The seaside village Maleme is located in western Crete 15 km westwards from Chania-Town. History of Maleme: German paratroopers landed in Maleme in May 1941, fierce positional battles ensued. The German military cemetery is today behind Maleme at a height of 110 meters above sea level. It is a very well-kept cemetery. The guest book and visitors' comments are also interesting! There is a nice cafe where you can stop. Mostly all people don't want to visit cemeteries while on vacation, but visiting Maleme you´ll realize how good we are today in a united Europe. It didn't harm my holiday mood.

Panormo is located beween two mountains, 22 km from the seaside City Rethymnon in the northwest of Crete. The sandy coves are small but each one is allocated to a hotel, making them fairly private. The traditional small coastal village Panormo has a small harbour surrounded from taverns and cafes. Things to do and to see in the area Panormo: 1. The old town of Rethymnon The third largest town in Crete with approx. 30,000 inhabitants is, like Chania, much influenced by its Venetian occupation. In early Christian times the place was sparsely populated, but the Venetians shaped the town with the construction of the enormous fortress, Fortezza Castle. Today Rethymnon is a mixture of Cretan, Turkish and Venetian elements and competes with Chania, the former seat of government. Rethymnon has a very long beach (12km) primarily of sand. There is a lot of ship traffic in the harbour and during the season there are mini cruises to Santorin which take four hours one way. The old Venetian harbour is the heart of the old town. There is one tavern after the other and colourful fishing boats to see. The way to the crooked alleyways of the old town starts here. Large wooden balconies decorate houses which stem from Turkish times and marble blocks with arabic inscriptions adorn other buildings.

The beach at Platanias and Agia Marina is of fine sand. This is the reason that tourism is so developed here. You will find hotels and apartments of every category. Ravdoucha is a small mountain village on the wild Rodhopou Peninsula, 200 meters above the sea level. To the beach (steeper away) about 10 minutes´drive. This rocky bay gives the best conditions for snorkeling and fishing. At the beach there is a little tavern offering greek cuisine. 7 Km ( about 11 minutes drive) to the larger coastal town Kolimbari. 14 Km to the town of Kastelli - Kissamos about 19 minutes drive and to Chania Town 30 minutes. This small hidden bay from Ravdoucha is very popular with the locals who also go there for fishing. The following excursion you can easily reach by car: 1.The fishing village Kolimbari where you can sit at the small harbor, right by the sea and indulge yourself in the traditional taverns. 2. Hike through the Sassalos gorge. 3.Visit the oldest olive tree in the mountain village of Vouves. There is a small local museum and a café. 4.For swimming to Falassarna Bay. Falassarna is a bathing paradise with small sandy bays providing a deck chair and parasol rental and also a few good taverns where you can stop off.

To the lagoon Balos 50 minutes, to the dunes of Falassanra 45 minutes drive. Worth to see: The Monastery Moni Gonias in Kolimbari. The natural monument, the oldest olive tree in the mountain village Vouves. You can walk to the cave of Marathokefala. Worth to see is the old church St. Michael , 7. AC, in Episkopi in the inland. This church is one of the oldest churches of Crete.

Stalos is a seaside resort in western Crete, just outside the picturesque town of Chania. Only 9 km to the old town of Chania. 28 km to the Airport Chania, approximately 30 minutes drive . The Village Stalos belongs to the district Platanias. In contrast to the coastal villages Agia Marina and Platanias it is quiet here. The inland of the Village Stalos is hilly, overlooking the bay of Chania. The coastal town has a fine sandy beach, tavernas, cafes, supermarkets, bakery, a pharmacy and ATM. The village of Stavros on the northernmost tip of the Akrotiri Peninsula was the location in the sixties for the world famous film "Zorba The Greek" starring Anthony Quinn. The well-known last scene "Zorbas Dance" was amongst those filmed here. The small seaside village of Stavros is located on the "Akrotiri" peninsula, about 14.9 km from Chania. The Akrotiri peninsula commes with an impressive rocky landscape and attracted hermits centuries ago. The Village Tavronitis belongs to the municipality of Platanias Western Crete. 6 km to the Village Kolimbari and 37 km to the Airport of Chania (40 minutes drive). Tavronitis is a traditional quiet village with taverns, kafenions, pharmacy, hairdresser, dry-cleaning, and several supermarkets. The long pebble beach extends to the coastal village Kolimbari. This is our favourit beach for swimming in the West Coast of Crte, because there is no hustle and bustle. Enjoy staggering natural beauty in the outback of Tavronitis. You will see many picturesque mountain villages like Voukolies and Vouves, set in green hills. Discover the unknown protected areas like the Gorge of Sarikari, Gorge of Sasalos and the Natural Monument, the oldest olive tree in the mountain village Vouves. Vamos is the capital of the district Apokoronas municipalitiy of Chania located in Western Crete. Vamos is located 26 km from the capital city of Chania.
