Agia Galini is a small, but all the more so lively location on Crete`s southern coast, 75 km from the Capital Heraklion. Built right up the hillside, tavernas and studios jostle each other (the meaning of the place name is holy sea tranquillity!). Some streets are pedestrian only and a small harbour completes the picture. Those who have a room with a sea view have a beautiful vista in and over the Bay. Pure holiday mood! The beautiful beach (which in summer can get very hot) is only a few minutes walk away. At the port of Agia Galini watersport-providers offering boat-tours. They offer trips to Preveli and (in good weather) also to Gavdos.
Agia Galini is situeated steep on a ridge that leads to the coast. The old fishing village Agia Galini has grown to a "small south-coast-town". Small family run hotels and a 4 Star-Hotel dominate the small town. The center of Agia Galini consists of narrow streets with numerous cafes, taverns and small shops and houses decorated with flower tubs. The coastline of Agia Galini consists of the port with the small pier, which is framed by taverns. Bathing is difficult here, so there is a small path above the harbor (800 m) leading over a hill to the beach of Agia Galini. Most hotels and apartments are located directly in the village. Between Agia Galini and the beach is a dry river bed. A small, nostalgic bridge leads over this stream to the beach. The watercourse is in the Midsummer dried out.
Beach highlights: The long sandy beach of Timbaki, approx. 8 km from Agia Galini (eastbound)
and the beach of "Agios Pavlos" and "Triopetra" west of Agia Galini. Westwards of Agia Galini, in direction to Plakias, follow numerous, small, picturesque bays.
The Inland of Agia Galini is an arid and barren area but there also hiking opportunities. We recommend one for hiking fans a
combination trip with northwest Crete and Agia Galini (Ida). Hiking opportunities: the child-friendly and easy round trip through the "Plataniani Plateau", which is not marked, however. This very easy round trip you can walk too with simple sports shoes, you should start early in the morning or afternoon, as there is no shade. You will be rewarded by the panoramic view of the Libyan Sea and the Ida massif. The hike starts at Platanos the foothills of the Ida massif. Follow the description from the tour-info-board. This little hike is only 5.7 km long and takes about 2 hours.
Hike to the "Kartalos rock cone". This hike takes 3 ½ hours and is also possible with sports shoes. This path is marked by signposts.
This itinerarie from Agia Galini through the hinterland to the village "Grigoria", where the hike begins and ends is very varied.
