Agia Roumeli is a car-free place that can only be reached by ferry. The famous narrowest part of the Gorge is easily accessible from the bottom in Agia Roumeli. This short hike from the exit to the narrowest point and back to Agia Roumeli takes about 2 1/2 hours. On this tour you will admire the steeply sloping mountain from the seaside, it is an impressive seaway. The Samaria Gorge is the longest and narrowest gorge in Europe. The public transport in the South of Crete is not well developed. If you want to explore the South, a rental car is a MUST. Hikers can use the ferry as a means of transport between the places on the south coast.
However, it does not pay off if you use the ferry too often and it is more expensive than renting a car. The transfer to the south coast alone is just as expensive "one-way" as a week's rental car.
