Museums & Archaeological Sites
Archanes is home to several interesting attractions, including the Archaeological Museum, which houses findings from Fourni (royal tombs, Vathipetro, Tourkogeitonia, Youchtas Minoan Sanctuary). Also worth mentioning are the Folklore Museum, the Museum of World War I and II, as well as the Museum of Cretan History and Tradition.
A visit to the Minoan Palace of Archanes, located in Tourkogeitonia and discovered in 1964, is highly recommended. The palace was as large as the Palace of Knossos and is believed to be closely connected with it.
Beach Highlights:
The tranquil, gently sloping pebble beach of Koutsounari, known as "Long Beach," is perfect for those looking to escape crowds. The pebbles are very fine, making it comfortable for walking.
The pristine sandy beach of Xerokampos is also worth a visit. It’s located in the southernmost region of Europe, where temperatures can rise significantly in the summer months.
Hiking Excursions around the Koutsounari Region:
The Red Butterfly Gorge, also known as the Butterfly Gorge, is a small but captivating hiking trail. Proper hiking shoes are recommended.
Other notable hikes include the Sarakina Gorge, Mirtos Gorge, and Dasaki Gorge. The Sarakina and Mirtos gorges connect at the base of Mount Lazaros and offer a total hiking time of about 6 hours, with a height difference of 600 meters. Red markings and stone piles indicate the route. The hike is quite challenging, so make sure you are prepared. Mobile reception is available. During spring, the Sarakina Gorge may have high water levels, so bring waterproof shoes.
The Dasaki Gorge is located between the Thipti mountains and the Ornoberg mountains and descends to the southern coast. This hike is of moderate difficulty and offers breathtaking panoramic views of the coastline. The walking time is about 4 hours.
Cultural Highlights around Koutsounari:
The Palace of Zakros, dating back to 1900 BC, is one of the most significant archaeological sites of the Minoan civilization. It is the fourth-largest palace on Crete, covering approximately 8,000 square meters. The palace was believed to have had 300 rooms, with three-story buildings. Approximately 10,000 artifacts from the site are displayed in the Heraklion, Sitia, and Agios Nikolaos museums. In addition to visiting the Minoan Palace, you can also enjoy the beautiful pebbled beach nearby. From Kato Zakros, you can hike to the "Valley of Death," named for the numerous Minoan sarcophagi discovered there.
The Presos Plateau, also known as Praisos, is a fertile highland area that contrasts with the dry coastal region. It offers lush vegetation and remains from the post-Minoan Presos/Praisos settlement.
The Morosini Aqueduct is another fascinating site located in the Agia Eirini Gorge.
The Minoan Palace of Knossos, just 10 km from the Manili Boutique Suites and Villas, is one of the most significant archaeological sites in Crete. Occupied from the Neolithic period through to the 5th century AD, the palace is steeped in fascinating myths, including the labyrinth legend with the Minotaur, as well as the stories of Daedalus and Icarus from Greek mythology.
In Heraklion, you’ll find the Heraklion Archaeological Museum, one of Europe’s most important museums, which is certainly worth a visit. Additionally, the Historical Museum, Natural History Museum, and the Morosini Fountain at Lion Square, built in 1628, are all highly recommended. In Heraklion, you can also visit the Cathedral of Saint Minas and the exhibition of St. Catherine of Sinai, showcasing unique icons, books, and artifacts.
