The village of Zaros with its lake is located on the ridge of Psiloritis, approx. 40 km south of the capital Heraklion, at 450 meters above sea level. The water of the lake is fed from the mountains. The water is also bottled and sold all over the island. There is also a trout farm here. The area is a nature reserve for the bearded vulture and for 70 endemic plant species. The limestone area in its limestone crevices offers numerous habitats for rare plant species that grow up to a height of 2000 meters above sea level!
There are 2 natural monuments: "Cephalanthera Cuculata". On the southern slopes of the highest mountain in Crete "Psiloritis". Above the mountain village Zaros, there is the forest "Rouvas" with the beautiful "Rouvas Gorge".
The forests are part of the "Natura 2000" nature reserve program and consist of old oak, holm oak and cypress. The pine forest follows towards Zaros. You will see limestone cliffs with crevice vegetation, scrubland and heathlands with low and sparse vegetation while hiking. A very varied landscape. The European hiking trail E4 leads through the area of Zaros. The entry into the "Rouvas" gorge begins in Zaros. Worth to see in this region: we recommend the Minoan archaeological site "Phaistos" and a visit to the oldest law panel in Europe called "Gortyna" or sometimes called "Gortys".
