Pylos is a small picturesque port city with approx. 5400 inhabitants in the southwestern Peloponnese in the administrative district of Messenia. Pylos has a small harbor promenade and a beautiful platia (village square) with large plane trees. The city is built on a slope like the nearby villages Methoni and Koroni. In the upper town of Pylos you can see the fortresses built in the 16th century. There is also a mosque within the walls, which was later converted into a church by the Venetians.
The place is also a museum with archaeological equipment from the Mycenaean and Roman times. A local history museum that explains the Battle of Navarino (the beginning of the Greek uprising against the Turks). The museum documents the entire Philhellenic movement.
Behind Pylos, the protected Navarino Bay ( nature reserve)begins with its dune beaches.
Important archaeological site:
The famous sage, Nestor, ruled here with Agamemnon and 90 warships in the Trojan War.
Nestor returned from the war as one of the intact. Until his old days he was a respected man. Many military leaders in crisis situations asked him for advice. That is why company seniors are still called Nestorn today.
The Nestor's Palace is architecturally very valuable. The equipment found in the palace is also interesting. Linear B tablets were found, on which detailed records were kept of the goods that prove that this palace was a huge administrative apparatus. The foundation walls of the palace consist of stone blocks. In the palace there were stairs with an upper floor. The turn and ceilings were carefully worked with fresco painting. Visitors can visit the Megaron, the main palace, the portico, a number of commercial buildings, apartment buildings and warehouses, and the bath. The Palace of Pylos Nestor is in the village of Epano Engliano. Homer described this palace in great detail in his Odyssey 4.210
